Votenet Solutions understands that we have a responsibility to our customers and to the environment we all share. By partnering with Sustainable Harvest and Renewable Choice Energy, Votenet is committed to reducing the environmental impact of our business, supporting renewable energy technologies, and to educating our clients on how they can reduce the carbon footprint of their voting and elections through our electronic voting products.
EPA Green Power Partnership
Votenet Solutions, Inc. participates in the EPA Green Power Partnership that encourages the voluntary use of green power. Our commitment as a Green Power Partner helps to reduce the risks associated with climate change by supporting technologies that are more sustainable for businesses and communities.
The Parternship currently has hundreds of Partner organizations voluntarily purchasing billions of kilowatt-hours of green power annually. Partners include a wide variety of leading organizations including Fortune 500 companies, and small and medium sized businesses, state, local and federal governments, and colleges and universities.
We purchase Renewable Energy Credits from our partner, Renewable Choice Energy (RCE), to help offset the environmental impact of our electronic voting solutions. We are supporting the generation of wind powered electricity via RCE's American Wind™ power product, a blend of renewable energy credits from wind farms across North America, primarily in the U.S. The number of offsets purchased takes into account aspects of Votenet’s supply chain, including production and delivery of our online electronic voting solution.
We have partnered with SHI and ReTreeUS to plant trees each time we sign a new client and renew an existing one. This investment helps offset the energy used to run a computer during the electronic voting process and ensures a carbon-neutral election.
We have become more energy efficient by implementing a comprehensive internal green program that has management and staff buy-in. As a result, we have reduced the carbon footprint in our offices. To date we have taken the following steps:
Turning off all lights and electrical equipment while not in use
Adjusting the power options on all computers, printers, and fax machines to enter into sleep/hibernate mode at regular and recommended intervals
Discouraging printing of non-essential material
Unplugging all non-essential electrical equipment during the day and during non-business hours
Votenet has a fully functioning recycling program supported and regulated through our building manager. We recycle all appropriate items and have successfully reduced our waste by: eliminating all disposable cups, silverware, and dishes in favor of reusable items, discouraging printing of non-essential material, printing inter-office materials on previously used paper before recycling and limiting the use of paper-based marketing materials.
Environmentally-friendly HR Practices
Votenet has a firm policy of allowing and encouraging employees to work from home as appropriate, and we have upgraded to a state-of-the-art phone system that can be accessed from anywhere to help accomplish this. Also, all of the information needed for an employee to be productive during any given workday is available online. We also encourage employees to use metro or other earth-friendly methods of commuting when they do come into the offices by a pre-tax transportation benefit and by having a centrally located office. In fact, out of all of our DC- based employees, three walk to work, one bikes (weather permitting), seven take public transportation, and only one drives.
We have gained efficiencies by reducing the energy demands at our electronic voting datacenter, through server consolidation and virtualization. These steps have resulted in a 60% reduction in hardware and storage space by 70%. All of our servers are energy star rated.
Support for the ASAE Social Responsibility Initiative
We proudly support the American Society of Association Executive's Social Responsibility initiative and have officially adopted the Global Principles for Socially Responsible Associations & Nonprofits.
As a result of our work implementing paperless electronic voting solutions for clients, we have helped numerous organizations achieve their green goals and become more energy efficient. We have also partnered with Renewable Choice to make it possible for any organization to assess the environmental impact of its paper balloting vs. our electronic voting solutions, via our online calculators.
Votenet is increasing our commitment to the environment and clients by partnering with ReTreesUS. For every eBallot renewal, a tree will be planted in the United States of America, and a certificate will be presented to the client.
