Washington, D.C., November 21, 2008 - Votenet™ Solutions, Inc., the leading provider of secure online governance solutions for associations, non-profits, universities and organizations, and The Kushner Companies, a non-profit CEO and governing board advisory firm, today announced the results of the first-ever Index of Association and Non-Profit Online Voting Participation.
"This index provides valuable benchmark data enabling associations and non-profit organizations to compare their voting participation rates in leadership elections against industry peers," stated Michael Tuteur, president and chief executive officer, Votenet Solutions, Inc. "By measuring voter participation and analyzing how organizations have been successful in raising it through online voting, this study is a highly effective resource for improving election processes."
The index data was gathered through a September 2008 survey of 300 associations and non-profit organizations that have used online ballots to conduct their Board of Directors and leadership elections. Key results include:
- Prior to using online voting, 26% of organizations, the highest percentage of respondents, had an 8-12% voter participation rate
- After using online voting, 59% of organizations increased voter participation, usually in their next election. 48% of organizations surveyed increased their participation up to 10%, and 11% of the respondents saw an increase greater than 15%.
- Consistently sending email reminders to members was cited as the most effective method of improving online voting participation
- 95% of respondents said they would not go back to their previous method of conducting elections after using online voting
"As it may take several elections to raise awareness among members and for organizations to successfully implement and modify the online process, we're planning to publish future index results in order to measure online voter participation over time," stated David Kushner, President, The Kushner Companies, LLC.
